Where Art Thou?

It is very useful for us to frequently propose to ourselves this question, Where art thou? No former zeal, boldness, or usefulness will excuse present neglects. Yet we are most apt to boast of what we have been and done, when we have been neglectful in present duty. We shall do well often to imagine that we hear the Lord inquire, Where art thou? or, What doest thou here? In places of worldly amusement, in trifling company, riotous feastings, or where unlawful traffic is being carried on, the Christian can have no good answer ready. Nor can the minister, if entangled by needless, worldly business, by trifling studies, or by the pursuits of ambition, preferment of pleasure or reputation, to the neglect of the important duties of his calling.
Nay, if we are at home when we should be in the sanctuary preaching or teaching, or if we are drowsy or asleep under the sound of the gospel, or in company when we should be engaged in prayer and meditation or searching the Scriptures, such a question must confound us. In short, every station has its proper duties, every portion of time its proper work, and we should frequently call ourselves to account whether we be in our place and proper employment.—Sel.
