Train Robbery and Life Insurance
On October 8 the west-bound Rock Island train was held up and robbed near Howe, Oklahoma. Train hold-ups have been quite numerous during recent months, and it shows that we are cursed with a class of criminals that are not only perpetuating but increasing themselves. Until recently life-insurance was confined almost exclusively to the men, but at the present there are about six million women in America who are wage-earners. Many of these have families dependent upon them, the same as men, and hence the life-insurance companies are writing policies for a great many of these women. In their investigations, the insurance companies consider these working women really better risks than men, while the same companies are very wary of the so-called society women, with their high life, and their continual rounds of feastings, in which a great many indigestible foods and drinks are consumed. The life-insurance companies are in no sense sentimental. They deal in cold facts from a business standpoint; and incidentally, this shows that it isn't hard work and faithful labor that shortens life so much as dissipation and debauchery.
