The Hope within Me

By William S. Holman
I want to know that I am on the road To where the weary, world-worn soul may rest. I want to feel that sin's distressing load Anon will be removed at God's behest. I want to hear, when life's dark day is past, The strain of angels' own seraphic bliss. And till I separate from friends at last, I want to breathe an inward cry like this: Holy, holy, holy God above, Jesus, Saviour, keep me here in the bonds of love. While this earth is peopled by the wilful and the base, 'Mid the gathering of the saints, let me find a place.
I would not wish to live my life alone, Without a touch of Thy correcting care; Nor would I heed an impulse of my own, But wait until Thy guiding voice I hear. There is no joy like that of Thine approach, When human weal would tempt me to complain, When o'er my soul sin's subtle forms en- croach, And poison growths strike bitter root again. Holy, holy, holy God above, Jesus, Saviour, take me where all is light and love. When this earth is darkened as it wanders on through space, In the New Jerusalem let me find a place.
When things of light and life seem far away, My heart incased within a hardened shell, Fain would I beg for one directing ray— Some token to my soul that all is well. I know I live if only in a sigh, If only my own helplessness to feel, I can not, dare not let this fond hope die. O Father, listen to my last appeal. Holy, holy, holy God above, Jesus, Saviour, let me feel Thy sweet power of love. When this earth is gleaming with the glory of Thy face, In the kingdom all Thine own let me find a place.
