Proportion of Insanity

Proportion of Insanity.—The New York Medical Record of December 24 notes that, "according to the Indiana State Board of Charities, the number of insane in that State is approximately forty-four hundred, or one in six hundred seventy-five of the present population. The proportion of insane in Indiana is less than in the States of Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa. In some of the New England States, however, it is only about half what it is in Indiana." It also refers to three in one family becoming insane within a few hours, no signs of aberration of mind having been known in the family previous to this. Insanity is rapidly on the increase.
