THE TRUE CIVILIZER.

"It is easy to confound causes with effects," the S. S. Times well says. "Summer showers do not so often lower the temperature as the lowering temperature produces the showers. Christianity is a cause, civilization is an effect, or result. It was the testimony of one of the great missionaries that civilization never civilizes; for it is only a condition of society, not a moving power. When God drops out of the social and individual consciousness of men, civilization deteriorates. When Christ takes possession, civilization advances. He who can say, 'Christ liveth in me,' has within himself the sure power by which civilization can move forward and upward."
