The Outlook in Japan

The Outlook in Japan.—New treaties with Japan are to go into effect this year, which will probably largely influence educational missionary work in the empire. The educational council of Japan is said to advise that foreigners be forbidden to conduct schools in Japan; whether this includes theological schools does not yet appear. The reason is said to be “the influence of foreigners in denationalizing the youth of Japan.” The national spirit, already manifested in other departments, seems likely to affect the educational system. Two opposite tendencies have for years been at work in this island empire, one in favor of a fellowship of nations, and the other intensely and narrowly Japanese, and miscalled patriotic. The latter seems for the time to prevail.—Missionary Review.
