BATTLE CREEK COLLEGE

A Training School for Christian Workers

"Education is not a preparation for life; it is life."

"The schools will be found to be the way that God has chosen for the regeneration of the world."—Horace Mann.

"Our civilization rushes to a vast and fatal plunge unless God is enthroned in the educated minds of our people."—John Henry Barrows.

"The aim of the Christian college is not reached by turning out students who are merely believers in Christianity. . . . It aims to fill its students with the spirit of St. Paul; to make them alive in the service of Christ; to fill them with the enthusiasm of humanity."—Idem.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION IS PROTESTANT EDUCATION

THE OBJECT of Battle Creek College is to train Christian workers; its motto, "Learn to do by doing." "It is not a soul, it is not a body, that we are training up, but a MAN, and we ought not to divide him."

Lines of Work Offered

DEGREES NOT THE OBJECT

Why?—Because students are working for the approval of God, rather than for the seal of the State. Each student receives individual attention, and each must stand on his own merit. Not what you may have known, but what you are now able to use, is of value in education.

"The course in each school is apparently an arbitrary thing, impossible to conceive of as having a basis in a well-matured philosophy of education."—Samuel Thurber.

"There is no single curriculum, no ideal curriculum, and any prearranged course of advanced study is an affront to the mind of the real student. . . . We ask not that science be placed in the curriculum, for we can tolerate no curriculum. The course of study itself is a relic of medievalism."—David Starr Jordan.

Principles of the Institution

The spiritual in education is given first place. It is education by faith, not by sight.

The Bible is the basis of all work; it is taken for what it says, and the spirit of higher criticism and evolution is discarded.

All teaching is in harmony with physiological law.

Instruction in science teaches first how to live.

Every effort is made to develop the threefold nature.

Special Features

Thoroughness in the common branches is insisted upon, no student being allowed to take advanced work until proficient in these. Frequent drills and reviews.

Careful supervision of the health of students by competent physicians.

Dormitory life. Hygienic board on the European plan.

Expenses moderate.

Students allowed to work in part of payment of expenses.
