Pertinent Questions and Terse Answers
THE Rockford (Illinois) Star has these very forceful things to say: "Where saloons exist, why are they constantly under police surveillance? "Why is it that no other line of business is placed under restraint and espionage? "Why is it that the saloon must close at a certain hour at night, and this restriction is required of no other business? "Why is it that women and boys are allowed to enter all business places but saloons? "Why is a high license exacted of saloons and not of any other kind of business? "Why is it that saloons can not be operated within a certain distance of a school or church, though any other business can? "The answer is plain. It is because the law looks upon the saloon as an evil that must be controlled, watched, restricted, and policed."
