Something Knotty.

The Universalists, as every body well knows, strenuously deny the existence of a personal Devil. They tell us that when a man sins, he is led away by his evil passions; that there is no real being who tempts men to wickedness, and that any such idea is contrary to the teaching of Scripture. Now here is something that we would like to have Universalists explain: We are told in the New Testament, that Jesus, himself, when in the wilderness, was tempted several times. Our question is, Who, or what tempted him? Was it not a personal Devil? If not, then it was his evil passions, and therefore, according to Universalism, Jesus Christ was an imperfect being!! There is no getting over it. One or the other of these conclusions must obtain:—either that there is a personal Devil, or that Jesus Christ is imperfect. We defy a successful refutation.
