1 Chronicles 1:20

And Joktan begat Almodad, and Sheleph, and Hazarmaveth, and Jerah,

And Joktan's sons stand within the long genealogical lists of the first eight chapters of Chronicles, which trace ancestry back to the earliest times. Those lists may seem hard to understand or of little value. Yet the chapter is no less inspired than the twenty-third Psalm, having been written and preserved by the direction of God's Spirit.

God has provided such Scripture as needed, even when its purpose or use is not clear. Accurate genealogies were necessary to the development and certainty of the gospel. The records supplied proof of hereditary descent needed after the exile to allot land and maintain temple service.

The genealogies record the origin and distribution of races and contain material of interest to scholars studying ethnology. The genealogy shows that genealogical records were carefully kept. Such carefully kept records point to the fact that every person has a faithful record in the books of heaven. Along the way the Bible holds spiritual truths for those seeking other kinds of knowledge.
