1 Chronicles 1:26

Serug, Nahor, Terah,

The verse contains simply the names of persons, Serug, Nahor, and Terah, as part of the records of Adam's posterity and the descendants of Noah's sons. It is one of over five hundred verses in the first twelve chapters of 1 Chronicles that are nearly all names. It belongs to the genealogies of 1 Chronicles 1-4, part of the long genealogical lists in the opening chapters of the book that trace family ancestry back to the earliest times. These genealogies record the origin and distribution of races. They supplied proof of hereditary descent needed after the exile for assigning land and maintaining temple service.

Accurate genealogies were necessary to the development and certainty of the gospel, so this genealogy was preserved by God's Spirit. The verse is part of the inspired and profitable Scripture, even when such lists may not be equally interesting or useful to every reader. Such lists hold value for scholars while spiritual truths are found along the way.

Not every verse in the Bible is a promise, for this verse is not an expressed precious promise to God's people. As part of a genealogy, the verse shows that God keeps a faithful record of each soul in the books of heaven.
