1 Chronicles 1:43

Now these are the kings that reigned in the land of Edom before any king reigned over the children of Israel; Bela the son of Beor: and the name of his city was Dinhabah.

This verse stands within the genealogical record of Esau's descendants and repeats the record of Edom's kings found in Genesis 36:31. It lists the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any king reigned over Israel, naming Bela the son of Beor and identifying Dinhabah as his city. The statement that these kings reigned before any king over Israel is prophetic, referring to Jacob's prophecy of kings for Edom which Moses had in mind.

Its inclusion in Scripture is purposeful and inspired, preserved under the direction of God's Spirit because accurate genealogies were necessary to the development and certainty of the gospel. Such genealogical and historical details can interest scholars and those studying the origin and distribution of races, even when their value is not immediately apparent to every reader. Genealogical lists are not necessarily as interesting or instructive as other biblical passages, nor suited to equally frequent reading.
