1 Chronicles 11:10
These also are the chief of the mighty men whom David had, who strengthened themselves with him in his kingdom, and with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel. These also are the chief of the mighty men whom David had, who strengthened themselves with him in his kingdom, and with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel.
The verse introduces the chief of the mighty men who strengthened themselves together with David and with all Israel to make him king over all Israel, according to the word of the Lord concerning Israel. It gives a parallel account to the record in Samuel, with which it is to be compared. The tribes acknowledged David as king in the assembly at Hebron, with about 350,000 fighting men gathered for a three-day festival. The political changes leading to his accession took place through events involving Ish-bosheth, Abner, and Saul's remaining heirs, but behind them was God's purpose to bring David to the throne.
The chief men gathered to David from the contingents of each tribe as a loyal army of great skill and wisdom and perfect heart. They were mighty men with faces like lions and swift like roes, and the account belongs to the prosperous years of David's reign in the record centered on the kingdom of Judah. The reason these men were truly mighty is worth considering, and the account is to be studied for David's work, the division of his armies, his virtues and his mistakes, and God's mercy and guidance.
