1 Chronicles 11:14

And they set themselves in the midst of that parcel, and delivered it, and slew the Philistines; and the LORD saved them by a great deliverance.

The passage belongs to chapters 10-12 of 1 Chronicles, which form the first part of Chronicles parallel to the last part of Samuel and cover the kingdom of Judah in the prosperous years of David's reign. It belongs to the record of David's work in 1 Chronicles that is to be set alongside the parallel record in Samuel apart from genealogies. It is part of the fuller account of the gathering of the tribes of Israel at Hebron when they acknowledged David as king.

That account records the fighting men assembled for that occasion and the organization and division of his armies. Within it the verse supplies an instance of men who were truly mighty, inviting consideration of the reason for their might. It thus illustrates David's work, both his virtues and his mistakes, and God's mercy and guidance in granting deliverance by a great deliverance.
