1 Chronicles 11:20

And Abishai the brother of Joab, he was chief of the three: for lifting up his spear against three hundred, he slew them, and had a name among the three.

The book is Words of Days, Records of Events, forming one book in the Jewish canon, and this verse stands in chapters 10-12. It is parallel to the last part of Samuel, and apart from genealogies is to be compared with that record.

Historically it belongs to the record of David's work and the division of his armies amid the political changes through which God carried out His purpose to bring David to the throne over all Israel. It deals more fully with the kingdom of Judah in the prosperous years of his reign. There his virtues and his mistakes are shown together with God's mercy and guidance.

The verse presents Abishai the brother of Joab as chief of the three, one of the truly mighty men, who lifted his spear against three hundred, slew them, and had a name among the three. As one of David's loyal mighty men he stands with men of perfect heart, with faces like lions and swiftness like roes, marked by great skill and wisdom. Such men were truly mighty because in battle they cried to God and put their trust in Him, and so help was given.
