The book containing this verse means Words of Days, Records of Events, and deals especially with the kingdom of Judah. The verse stands in 1 Chronicles 10-12, covering the prosperous years of David's reign. It belongs to the fuller, parallel account of David's rise to rule all Israel, paralleling Samuel, especially the last part of Samuel and 2 Samuel, giving somewhat the same record with the exception of genealogies and to be compared with that parallel record.

The chapter and the next give the fuller account of the tribes' assembly at Hebron, where their fighting men numbered about 350,000 and the gathering lasted three days. The verse is part of the account of David's work and the division of his armies, among the lists of his loyal valiant mighty men naming those who were truly mighty, who are described as having faces like lions and being swift as roes, of great skill and wisdom and of perfect heart. The reason these men were truly mighty is found in 1 Chronicles 5:20. The account shows David's virtues and mistakes and God's mercy and guidance.
