1 Chronicles 11:39

Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Berothite, the armourbearer of Joab the son of Zeruiah,

The verse names two men enrolled among David's mighty men in the ordering of his armies. It stands within the fuller account of the gathering of the tribes of Israel at Hebron to acknowledge David as king. That gathering brought together great numbers of fighting men and was kept with a three-day festival. As one entry in the long record of names in Chronicles, it shows how the records of God's people were preserved and how the integrity of the tribes was maintained. For full understanding it belongs with 1 Chronicles 10-12, appointed for June 28, and is to be compared with the parallel record in Samuel, genealogies excepted. The account of David's forces sets forth the work David accomplished, his virtues and his mistakes, together with God's mercy and guidance toward him. The men were truly mighty because they cried to God and put their trust in Him, according to 1 Chronicles 5:20.
