1 Chronicles 11:41

Uriah the Hittite, Zabad the son of Ahlai,

The verse stands in 1 Chronicles 10-12. That 10-12 section covers the prosperous years of David's reign. It stands within the wider 1 Chronicles 4-26 record that parallels the record in Samuel apart from genealogies, the first part of Chronicles paralleling the last part of Samuel. While Kings deals more fully with the northern ten-tribe kingdom, Chronicles deals with the kingdom of Judah.

It is also placed within 1 Chronicles 4-19, a section largely concerned with chronology and a long record of names often regarded as dry, tedious and uninteresting, yet with beautiful gems appearing here and there. The passage belongs to the fuller account of the tribes assembling at Hebron to recognize David as king. It belongs to the account of the work of David, the division of his armies, the work that he did, his virtues and his mistakes, and God's mercy and guidance. The passage gives no further detail about the names in this verse.

Like the rest of the record, it shows the preservation of the records of God's children and the integrity of the tribes, with the genealogy of the tribe of Judah carefully preserved because through Judah Christ came. Its naming of a mighty man calls for thought on why men were truly mighty, namely that God gave help when men cried to Him. It is appointed to be read with 1 Chronicles 10 and Proverbs 1.
