1 Chronicles 11:45

Jediael the son of Shimri, and Joha his brother, the Tizite,

Jediael the son of Shimri and Joha his brother are named among David's mighty men, part of that loyal army that gathered to David from each tribe. They belonged to men of skill and wisdom and perfect heart whose record is numbered in chapters 11 and 12. That list stands in chapters 10-12, covering the prosperous years of David's reign. It lies within the broader record in chapters 4-26.

The book records events with special attention to the kingdom of Judah and runs parallel to the last part of Samuel. This section is to be compared with the parallel record in Samuel with the exception of genealogies. Historically it belongs to the parallel and fuller account of David's rise to kingship over all Israel. It concerns the time when the tribes gathered and acknowledged him as king at Hebron, involving large numbers of fighting men.

That gathering showed the work of David and the division of his armies. The assembly was celebrated with a three-day festival. The passage gives reason to consider why the men were truly mighty, with attention to David's virtues and mistakes and to God's mercy and guidance.
