1 Chronicles 12:17
And David went out to meet them, and answered and said unto them, If ye be come peaceably unto me to help me, mine heart shall be knit unto you: but if ye be come to betray me to mine enemies, seeing there is no wrong in mine hands, the God of our fathers look thereon, and rebuke it.
The saying belongs to the account of David's mighty men, whose numbering is given in chapters 11 and 12. More fully, it stands at the assembling of the tribes at Hebron to recognize David as king. That assembly brought together about 350,000 fighting men and was celebrated with a three-day festival.
Those who gathered to David on that occasion were the contingents from Israel's tribes. They were loyal men, mighty and skilled, who came to support him.
