1 Chronicles 12:23

And these are the numbers of the bands that were ready armed to the war, and came to David to Hebron, to turn the kingdom of Saul to him, according to the word of the LORD.

The verse opens the fuller, parallel account of the political change that brought David to the throne. Armed bands and companies from the tribes came ready for war to David at Hebron to turn the kingdom of Saul over to him. They acted according to the word of the Lord and in keeping with His purpose to place David on the throne.

The tribal contingents that gathered were a loyal army, mighty, courageous, swift, skilled, wise, and wholehearted. The assembled fighting men are numbered at about 350,000. The detailed list in verses 23-40 is also reckoned as 339,600 warriors. Their gathering at Hebron became a three-day festival. Like those armed companies who joined David, students trained by selling religious literature will be prepared to support God's work and open new fields.
