1 Chronicles 12:26

Of the children of Levi four thousand and six hundred.

The verse belongs to the numbering of David's mighty men in chapters 11 and 12 of Chronicles. It belongs to a parallel account of David becoming king over all Israel and the events surrounding his rise to the throne. More specifically, it is part of the fuller account of the tribes assembling at Hebron to recognize David as king over all Israel. It is part of the record of the tribes and their numbers, preserving the identity and integrity of Israel's tribes.

The verse records 4,600 men of Levi among the warriors who joined and supported David. The contingents from the tribes who gathered to David were loyal and capable men. The whole gathering included about 350,000 fighting men and was celebrated with a three-day festival. Chapter 12 is one of twelve chapters made up almost entirely of names, showing that many Bible verses are lists rather than expressed promises. The account does not explain the verse's specific count of Levites.
