1 Chronicles 12:29
And of the children of Benjamin, the kindred of Saul, three thousand: for hitherto the greatest part of them had kept the ward of the house of Saul. And of the children of Benjamin, the kindred of Saul, three thousand: for hitherto the greatest part of them had kept the ward of the house of Saul.
This text forms part of the fuller, parallel record of the contingents from the tribes of Israel gathering to David at Hebron to acknowledge him as king over all Israel. Those who gathered were fighting warriors, mighty, skilled, wise, and loyal men. The assembled fighting men from the various tribes numbered about 350,000.
Of the Benjaminites who came there were three thousand, for until then the greatest part of them had remained loyal to and kept the ward of the house of Saul. The verse stands connected with the political changes that helped bring David to the throne, while God's purpose stood behind those changes. The gathering included a three-day festival.
