1 Chronicles 15:18

And with them their brethren of the second degree, Zechariah, Ben, and Jaaziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, Eliab, and Benaiah, and Maaseiah, and Mattithiah, and Elipheleh, and Mikneiah, and Obed-edom, and Jeiel, the porters.

1 Chronicles 15:18 belongs to the account of David gathering Israel to bring the ark from Kirjath-jearim to Jerusalem in connection with his plans for the house of God. It records David's removal of the ark to Jerusalem, culminating in its placement in the tabernacle he had pitched for it. This removal marks the ark's return to a place of worship after its time with the Philistines, at Beth-shemesh, at Kirjath-jearim, and in the house of Obed-edom.

The bringing of the ark described here was done according to God's appointed order. An earlier attempt had brought judgment because the ark was transported improperly. The verse names the brethren of the second degree, Levites and porters, who accompanied and served in the procession bringing the ark.

Those named are fellow Levites of the second rank who served with the principal singers and musicians, including Zechariah, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni and the others listed, while Obed-edom and Jeiel are identified as the porters or gatekeepers. In David's larger arrangement of the Levites for worship, these Levites served with musical instruments and voices in praising God. Music thus had an organized place in religious worship and was dedicated to God.
