1 Chronicles 15:20
And Zechariah, and Aziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, and Eliab, and Maaseiah, and Benaiah, with psalteries on Alamoth; And Zechariah, and Aziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, and Eliab, and Maaseiah, and Benaiah, with psalteries on Alamoth;
The verse belongs to the account of David gathering Israel to bring the ark from Kirjath-jearim to Jerusalem. In that account the ark was brought to the city of David at Jerusalem and placed in the tent David had prepared for it. The broader chapter shows David correcting the earlier disaster by acknowledging that God had not been sought according to the prescribed order and directing the priests and Levites to bring the ark as God had ordained.
The verse names eight Levite musicians appointed to play psalteries in the procession bringing the ark to Jerusalem. “On Alamoth” is a musical term for the arrangement, kind, manner or register of their playing, whose exact sense is uncertain. The verse shows that instruments and organized instrumental music were used in Israel’s worship and that David arranged musicians for sacred service.
