1 Chronicles 16:38
And Obed-edom with their brethren, threescore and eight; Obed-edom also the son of Jeduthun and Hosah to be porters: And Obed-edom with their brethren, threescore and eight; Obed-edom also the son of Jeduthun and Hosah to be porters:
The chapter holding this appointment reproduces almost word for word the first fifteen verses of Psalm 105 and presents a revised and somewhat altered version of Psalm 96 in verses 23-33. Behind the appointment lies the history that after David delayed bringing the ark to Jerusalem, it stayed three months in the house of Obed-edom, the Lord blessed his household, and David then brought the ark to the city with gladness. In that setting the verse appoints Obed-edom with his brethren, threescore and eight, to be porters, naming Obed-edom the son of Jeduthun and Hosah for that gatekeeping service. That gatekeeping service shows the temple service continued the appointed worship of the tabernacle, with Obed-edom, his relatives, and Hosah serving as gatekeepers while the priests carried out the regular offerings and incense service. As part of the Chronicles record of names and assignments, the verse reflects the careful preservation of Israel's records and tribal integrity.
