1 Chronicles 16:42
And with them Heman and Jeduthun with trumpets and cymbals for those that should make a sound, and with musical instruments of God. And the sons of Jeduthun were porters. And with them Heman and Jeduthun with trumpets and cymbals for those that should make a sound, and with musical instruments of God. And the sons of Jeduthun were porters.
The passage stands within the history of David conveying the ark from Kirjath-jearim to Jerusalem and setting it in the tent he had made ready to receive it. The appointment of Heman and Jeduthun with trumpets and cymbals for sounding, together with instruments designated as instruments of God, and the assignment of the sons of Jeduthun as gatekeepers, belongs to the ordering of service around that tent. The larger song surrounding the verse, in 1 Chronicles 16:23-33, is a revised form of Psalm 96, reproduced with some alterations.
The verse stands parallel to Psalm 105 in joining God's commandments to a thousand generations. The word commanded in that connection denotes the law, distinct from the promise respecting Canaan. Law and promise together constitute the covenant.
