Asaph Plays Cymbals Facing Zion at Sunriseby emmanuel_higgins

1 Chronicles 16:5

Asaph the chief, and next to him Zechariah, Jeiel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Mattithiah, and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Obed-edom: and Jeiel with psalteries and with harps; but Asaph made a sound with cymbals;

After the ark was brought to Jerusalem, singing with instrumental accompaniment was set in order as an established part of worship. David arranged this organized service of song, appointing singers and players to minister regularly before the Lord. The record in 1 Chronicles 16:4-7 preserves this ordering of worship through music.

Asaph stood as chief over the musicians, leading the appointed company. Next to him served Zechariah, Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, and Obed-edom, as singers and instrumentalists accompanying him. Jeiel played upon psalteries and harps, while Asaph sounded the cymbals. Psalms were also composed for use in the sanctuary and for the people to sing on their journeys up to the annual feasts. This continual service of song renewed the devotion of Israel to Jehovah and helped to free the nation from idolatry.
