1 Chronicles 17:16
And David the king came and sat before the LORD, and said, Who am I, O LORD God, and what is mine house, that thou hast brought me hitherto? And David the king came and sat before the LORD, and said, Who am I, O LORD God, and what is mine house, that thou hast brought me hitherto?
Chronicles falls into four divisions covering the genealogies, David, Solomon, and the remaining kings of Judah, with this verse belonging to the history of David. It supplements Samuel and Kings, assuming knowledge of those earlier books, supplying what was left out of them with many new and important facts, while saying scarcely anything about the northern kingdom or the sinful acts of David and Solomon. Its genealogies are preserved to prove hereditary descent for assigning the land to its owners and the temple service to its hereditary servants after the exile.
The verse stands in the account in which David first formed the design of building a house worthy of the divine majesty and opened his mind to the prophet Nathan. God accepted David's good intentions yet refused him the honor of building. The materials for the house were therefore provided by David before his death, though the edifice itself was raised by his son Solomon.
David came and sat before the Lord asking who he is and what his house is, humbly recognizing the great favor shown in bringing him and his family so far. He had been brought from humble beginnings to his present place as king with his household blessed. His question expresses gratitude and wonder at undeserved favor.
