1 Chronicles 17:21

And what one nation in the earth is like thy people Israel, whom God went to redeem to be his own people, to make thee a name of greatness and terribleness, by driving out nations from before thy people, whom thou hast redeemed out of Egypt?

The words belong to the time when David first conceived the design of building a house worthy of the divine majesty and opened his mind upon it to the prophet Nathan. God accepted David's good intentions yet withheld from him the honor of building, and the house was afterward raised by his son Solomon. They declare Israel unlike any other nation on earth, in that God went to redeem them from Egypt to be His own people. By driving out nations from before them He made Himself a name of greatness and awesomeness, so that their deliverance and the land given to them display His power and care for His people.
