1 Chronicles 18:15

And Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the host; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud, recorder.

The portion of Chronicles from chapter four through chapter nineteen is often regarded as dry and uninteresting because it deals largely with chronology and long records of names. Within that larger section this entry belongs to the record of the prosperous years of David's reign. It identifies Joab the son of Zeruiah as over the host, that is commander of the army, and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud as recorder. Even in such lists is seen the preservation of the records of God's children and the integrity of the tribes, especially the careful preservation of the genealogy of Judah through which Christ came.
