1 Chronicles 2:11

And Nahshon begat Salma, and Salma begat Boaz,

And Nahshon begat Salma, and Salma begat Boaz preserves a link in Judah's genealogy, tracing descent from Nahshon through Salma to Boaz. It stands in the opening long genealogies that record the names, events, origin, and distribution of families and peoples among the tribes, with particular attention to Judah and the priesthood. Those lists include the sons of Judah.

Those hereditary records were carefully kept because after the exile they were needed for allotting land and maintaining temple service. Judah's records were kept unbroken because the Messiah's line runs through David to Jesus Christ, who came through Judah. Even such genealogical lists have a place in Scripture and provide material of interest for students of ethnology.

The verse names people who lived and died thousands of years ago, some prosperous and some failures, whom no one now knows anything about. Yet it shows that God remembers each one by name even when long forgotten by others. Because God does not change, His remembering them then means He still keeps names put away safe and sure in His lists today. This brings comfort when downhearted.
