1 Chronicles 2:12

And Boaz begat Obed, and Obed begat Jesse,

The verse records the descent from Boaz through Obed to Jesse, with Boaz as the father of Obed and Obed as the father of Jesse. It belongs to the hereditary genealogical records of Judah, the list of the sons of Judah. That line of Judah leads through David and is the line of the Messiah, and it was carefully preserved because Jesus Christ came through it.

As one of the Bible's long lists of names, such genealogies record the origin and distribution of peoples. They contain material for study even when their value is not immediately apparent to every reader. Such preserved genealogies are included for instruction, though they are not equally interesting or instructive as passages such as the Gospels or Romans 8.

By naming people who lived thousands of years ago and are now unknown and forgotten, the verse shows that God remembers every person by name, whether prosperous or failures. Because God does not change, He still keeps every ordinary, unknown, downhearted life by name in His own lists, safe and sure. That remembrance gives comfort.
