Jesse Sits with David and His Brothersby emmanuel_higgins

1 Chronicles 2:14

Nethaneel the fourth, Raddai the fifth,

Nethaneel is the fourth son and Raddai the fifth son of Jesse, in a list running from Eliab to David as the seventh son, within the genealogy of Judah. The verse belongs to the long lists of names in the opening chapters of Chronicles and to biblical genealogy generally, showing that genealogical records are part of inspired Scripture and were preserved for instruction even when they are not as interesting or instructive as other portions or their value is not immediately clear to every reader. Records like this reward study of the origins and distribution of peoples, and the genealogy of Judah was carefully preserved as the lineage through which Christ came, because Jesus was of Judah and of David's family.

Nethaneel and Raddai belong to long lists of people about whom nothing is now known, who lived their lives and passed away thousands of years ago as ordinary people like any common man. Some were prosperous and some were failures, and they were long ago forgotten by people. The verse shows that God remembers every one of them by name and has forgotten not one, keeping the names of obscure and failing people put away safe and sure in His own lists, and because God does not change He still does so, which gives comfort when downhearted.
