1 Chronicles 2:18

And Caleb the son of Hezron begat children of Azubah his wife, and of Jerioth: her sons are these; Jesher, and Shobab, and Ardon.

The verse stands in the long genealogical lists that open Chronicles and set down the families of the tribes. It belongs more particularly to the carefully preserved genealogy of Judah, called the sons of Judah. There it enters the account of Caleb the son of Hezron, whose sons include Jesher and Shobab and Ardon.

Those named are obscure persons about whom nothing is known, who lived out their lives and passed away, some prosperous and some failures, forgotten by men thousands of years ago. Such genealogical records preserved hereditary descent that was needed after the exile to establish land ownership and duties in temple service. The record of Judah was kept with special care because Christ came through the tribe of Judah.

The keeping of these long lists of names shows that God is particular, remembering every one of them by name. A faithful record of every soul is kept in the books of heaven, with their names put away safe and sure in His lists. Because God is not the changing kind, He still remembers obscure and downhearted people today, and that remembrance gives comfort when downhearted.
