1 Chronicles 2:3

The sons of Judah; Er, and Onan, and Shelah: which three were born unto him of the daughter of Shua the Canaanitess. And Er, the firstborn of Judah, was evil in the sight of the LORD; and he slew him.

The verse names Judah's three sons Er and Onan and Shelah as born to him by the daughter of Shua, a Canaanite woman. It records that Er, Judah's firstborn, was evil in the sight of the Lord, and that the Lord put him to death. It belongs to Judah's genealogy, one of the genealogical records preserved unbroken until Jesus' first coming, and its careful preservation matters because Christ came through Judah's tribe.

Its place in that record shows that God is particular and that a faithful record of every soul is kept in heaven. It lists people about whom nothing is known, who lived their lives and passed away thousands of years ago, some prosperous and some failures.

God remembers every one of them by name even long after folks have forgotten them. Because God does not change He still keeps such a list today. Even an unknown, downhearted, failing person can therefore take comfort that his own name is put away safe and sure with God.
