1 Chronicles 2:31

And the sons of Appaim; Ishi. And the sons of Ishi; Sheshan. And the children of Sheshan; Ahlai.

The line carries the descent from Appaim to Ishi, from Ishi to Sheshan, and from Sheshan to Ahlai. Such records established hereditary descent, which was needed after the exile for assigning land and for maintaining temple service. It belongs to the genealogical lists in Chronicles that record names and family lines among the tribes, with particular attention to Judah and the priesthood.

It is part of the carefully preserved genealogy of the tribe of Judah, among the lists of the sons of Judah. This genealogy of Judah records the family line through which Christ came. Its place in the genealogy reflects the care with which family lines were recorded.

The genealogies are recorded and preserved for instruction and bear the stamp of inspiration, though they are not as interesting or instructive as the Gospels and need not be read or memorized as often as more spiritually rich passages. It is an example of the Bible's long lists of names whose value may not be immediately clear to every reader, showing that the inspired Bible contains depths to interest different people and reward study. The careful recording of family lines teaches that God keeps a faithful record of every person in the books of heaven.

It names people who lived and passed away thousands of years ago, whom no one now knows anything about and whom people forgot long ago. Some were perhaps prosperous and some perhaps failures like the reader, or like an obscure crippled old man. Yet God remembers every one of them by name. Because God does not change, His keeping of these old names gives comfort when downhearted that He still keeps ordinary, obscure, forgotten lives today, with each name put away safe and sure in His own lists.
