1 Chronicles 2:37

And Zabad begat Ephlal, and Ephlal begat Obed,

Zabad fathered Ephlal, and Ephlal fathered Obed. This link belongs to the carefully preserved family records and genealogy of Judah, called the lists of the sons of Judah. Those records supplied proof of hereditary lineage that was needed after the exile for assigning land and maintaining hereditary duties in temple service. As part of the genealogy of Judah it stands in the line of the tribe through which Christ came.

The verse and its genealogy are inspired and preserved for instruction. Yet such genealogical lists are not as interesting or instructive as the Gospels, and need not be read or studied as often.

The names here are of people about whom nothing is now known, who lived out their lives and passed away as ordinary people, some prosperous and some failures. God remembers every one of them by name even though people forgot them thousands of years ago, and because God does not change He still keeps each forgotten person's name kept safe and sure in His own lists, which gives comfort when downhearted.
