1 Chronicles 2:40

And Eleasah begat Sisamai, and Sisamai begat Shallum,

Eleasah fathered Sisamai, and Sisamai fathered Shallum, as one link in Judah's genealogy. It stands in the opening chapters of Chronicles, which record lists of names among other events and give particular attention to Judah and the priesthood. The genealogies were carefully preserved to maintain hereditary descent and family lines. After the exile this preservation was needed to establish land ownership and eligibility for temple service.

The genealogies of Judah and Levi alone remained unbroken until Christ's first advent. Judah's line mattered because Jesus Christ came from the tribe of Judah, from David's family. Its presence among long lists of names shows that inspired Scripture includes material whose value or interest is not equally apparent to every reader. Such lists record the origin and distribution of peoples and can engage those who study human history and ancestry.

The faithful keeping of family lines reflects that each soul is recorded in heaven. Though the people listed are otherwise forgotten, God remembers each person by name. This gives comfort that God is unchanging and does not forget people.
