1 Chronicles 2:5

The sons of Pharez; Hezron, and Hamul.

The verse names Hezron and Hamul as the sons of Pharez, also spelled Perez, in Judah's genealogy. It is part of the hereditary records needed after the exile to establish land ownership and eligibility for temple service. It is an example of the Bible's long lists of names whose value may not be immediately apparent. Those genealogies record the origin and distribution of races and provide material for scholarly study.

It belongs to the carefully preserved genealogy of Judah, the tribe through which Christ came. The genealogies of Judah and Levi were preserved unbroken until Jesus' first advent. Its place in the genealogy shows that God is particular and that a faithful record of every soul is kept in heaven.

The long record of people about whom nothing is known brings comfort when downhearted. It shows that God remembers every person by name after they have lived their lives and passed away, even when forgotten for thousands of years, whether they were prosperous or failures. Because God does not change, His remembrance continues unchanged, keeping even an obscure failing person's name put away safe and sure in His lists.
