1 Chronicles 2:52

And Shobal the father of Kirjath-jearim had sons; Haroeh, and half of the Manahethites.

And Shobal the father of Kirjath-jearim had among his descendants Haroeh and half of the Manahethites. The verse stands in the long genealogical lists of Chronicles, in the carefully preserved genealogy of Judah known as the sons of Judah. After the exile such genealogical records were needed to establish hereditary claims to land and hereditary duties in temple service. Such records preserve the origin and distribution of peoples and can interest scholars studying ethnology.

As part of Judah's genealogy, the verse contributes to the record of the tribe through which Christ came. Even a long list of names of people nobody knows anything about, who lived their lives and died thousands of years ago and were long forgotten by others, was kept as part of a careful record. This shows that God keeps a faithful record of every soul and remembers every person by name, whether prosperous or failures. Because God does not change, the list gives comfort when downhearted and assurance that God keeps each unknown person's name put away safe and sure in His own lists.
