1 Chronicles 2:53

And the families of Kirjath-jearim; the Ithrites, and the Puhites, and the Shumathites, and the Mishraites; of them came the Zareathites, and the Eshtaulites.

The verse sets out the families belonging to Kirjath-jearim as the Ithrites, the Puhites, the Shumathites, and the Mishraites, and traces the Zareathites and the Eshtaulites as coming from them. It is part of the genealogical record, belonging to the carefully preserved genealogy of Judah. That preservation of family descent helped to establish hereditary claims and duties after the exile.

By recording the origins and distribution of peoples, such long lists of names supply material of interest to students of ethnology, even when their value is not immediately apparent to every reader. This genealogy of Judah carries special importance because Christ came through the tribe of Judah. Its inclusion shows that God's record of His people is particular, preserving genealogical lines.

Though these families and clans have long been forgotten by people, the list shows that God remembers each person by name, whether prosperous or a failure. That remembrance gives comfort that God does not change and will not forget them.
