So Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Choose thee
So Gad came to David with the Lord's message after David's sinful census in numbering Israel. David was given the choice of which judgment would come upon Israel from among the punishments God set before him: famine, defeat by his enemies, or pestilence. The choice came after David recognized his sin and repented. He chose to fall into God's hands rather than into the hands of wicked men, trusting in God's mercy.
David's sacrifice and offerings at Ornan's threshing floor, the temple site, stayed and turned aside the destroying angel's sword. At that site God answered David by sending fire from heaven.
That sacrifice is a symbol of the Saviour's sacrifice and mediation for guilty people.
