1 Chronicles 21:18
Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and set up an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite. Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and set up an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.
After David's sin in numbering Israel, God directed him through His prophet Gad to make atonement by building an altar to the Lord on the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite, also called Araunah. David bought that site and the supplies for the offering at full price, refusing to present a sacrifice that cost him nothing. There he offered burnt offerings and peace offerings to stay the avenging sword of the destroying angel. God accepted the offering by answering with fire from heaven, and the angel stopped the destruction. That threshingfloor was the long-consecrated spot on which the temple was later built, and the sacrifice that there turned aside the sword was a fitting symbol and foreshadowing of the Saviour's sacrifice and mediation for guilty people.
