1 Chronicles 21:19

And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spake in the name of the LORD.

David went up in prompt obedience to the instruction Gad spoke in the name of the Lord. He went to the threshing floor of Ornan, also called Araunah, to make atonement for his sin. That threshing floor was on Mount Moriah on the spot where the temple was later built, a place long regarded as consecrated ground.

There David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings at his own expense rather than at another's cost. God accepted the offering by answering with fire from heaven. The ascending sacrifice turned aside the sword of the destroying angel and stopped the avenging destruction.

That sacrifice that stayed the destroying angel's sword was a fitting symbol of the Saviour's sacrifice and mediation for guilty people.
