David Gives Solomon the Plans for the Templeby emmanuel_higgins

1 Chronicles 21:24

And king David said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer burnt offerings without cost.

David refused Ornan, also called Araunah, when he freely offered the threshing floor and all that was needed for the sacrifice, insisting on buying them for the full price. He would not take what was another's for the Lord, nor offer burnt offerings without cost or that cost him nothing. The verse belongs to his offering of burnt offerings and peace offerings at Ornan's threshing floor to stay the avenging sword of the destroying angel, and the offering turned the sword aside.

The threshing floor was on Mount Moriah, long regarded as consecrated ground, on the spot where the temple was later built. It was where Abraham had revealed his willingness to sacrifice his only son and where God renewed with Abraham the covenant of blessing, including the Messianic promise of deliverance through the sacrifice of the Son of the Most High. On that spot God answered David by fire from heaven, and there worshipers of Jehovah would again meet God to renew their vows of allegiance. The sacrifice that turned aside the destroying angel's sword is a fitting symbol of the Saviour's sacrifice and mediation for guilty people. The verse teaches that an offering to God should involve a real cost to the giver.
