Then David said, This is the house of the LORD God, and this is the altar of the burnt offering for Israel.
This is the designation of the site for the future temple as the house of the Lord God and the altar of burnt offering for Israel. That site was the threshing floor of Araunah or Ornan the Jebusite on Mount Moriah. David selected it after he offered sacrifice there, the plague was stopped and the angel appeared, choosing this sanctuary site instead of the high place at Gibeon. Solomon later built and erected the temple sanctuary on that chosen site.
Until Solomon built a house for the sanctuary, the tabernacle continued to be the sanctuary and house of God. The verse marks the place where preparations began and belongs to the account of David establishing the worship of God for the temple that Solomon would build. David himself would not build it but was permitted only to gather and prepare materials because he was a man of war. The scale of that preparation is shown by the temple's great store of gold, silver, brass, iron, copper, and precious stones.
David received the patterns for the temple by the Spirit and gave them to Solomon, and when Solomon had built the temple the ark and the holy vessels were brought into it.
