David Charges Solomon to Build the Templeby emmanuel_higgins

1 Chronicles 22:12

Only the LORD give thee wisdom and understanding, and give thee charge concerning Israel, that thou mayest keep the law of the LORD thy God.

The verse belongs to David's preparation of Solomon to build the temple after the Lord had told David that he himself was not the one to do that work. David had made large provisions for the temple, yet his own part was to advise, counsel, and encourage Solomon out of his large experience, while the work itself was to devolve upon Solomon as the younger man. Solomon was to be the builder, and David's experience fitted him to counsel and encourage his son for that task.

The verse is David's prayer and desire that the Lord Himself would give Solomon wisdom and understanding and give him charge concerning Israel. That wisdom, understanding, and responsibility came from the Lord for governing Israel and were to be used to keep the law of the Lord. The charge places this God-given guidance within Solomon's temple-building work, links prosperity to heeding God's statutes and judgments, and joins it with a call to courage.

The verse teaches that older, weary and worn workers who do not grow with the work and do not grasp its greatness in all its bearings should not retain all responsibility, block the way, hinder helpers, or dictate exactly how the work must be done when God is qualifying others to take hold of it in a somewhat different way and carry it farther. They should instead let them advance and lift the standard higher so the work is not retarded.
