David Charges Solomon to Build the Templeby emmanuel_higgins

1 Chronicles 22:13

Then shalt thou prosper, if thou takest heed to fulfil the statutes and judgments which the LORD charged Moses with concerning Israel: be strong, and of good courage; dread not, nor be dismayed.

The verse is David's charge to his young and tender son Solomon to build an exceedingly magnificent house for the Lord, for which David had prepared abundantly before his death because he himself was forbidden to build for shedding much blood in wars, and God said the work must devolve on Solomon. David spoke out of his large experience to advise, counsel, and encourage Solomon for the work. The responsibility to build belonged to the younger man himself to do.

Solomon's prosperity in his great responsibility was conditional on taking heed to walk in righteousness and truth by carefully fulfilling the statutes and judgments the Lord charged Moses with concerning Israel. On that condition of obedience, God had prepared Solomon for the responsibility and promised him His presence, wisdom and understanding, peace and rest from enemies, prosperity in building the house, establishment of his throne over Israel, and grace and strength. The command to be strong and of good courage without dread or dismay means that faithfulness in obedience would bring divine help and success.

As part of David's final counsel to Solomon as king, the verse calls him to fulfill his duties faithfully and to reign as a good man showing mercy and loving-kindness to his people. Entrusting Solomon with such great responsibility was right because the promised blessing depended on his obedience. For today, older, weary and worn workers who do not grasp the greatness of the work in all its bearings and do not keep pace with its increasing demands should not hinder, limit, or block those God is calling and qualifying to assist and advance it, or dictate a different way of doing it, but should encourage them and let them carry it farther and lift the standard higher.
