1 Chronicles 22:14

Now, behold, in my trouble I have prepared for the house of the LORD an hundred thousand talents of gold, and a thousand thousand talents of silver; and of brass and iron without weight; for it is in abundance: timber also and stone have I prepared; and thou mayest add thereto.

David made large provision for the house of the Lord, gathering vast stores even though the Lord had told him he was not the one to do that building work. That work was to devolve upon Solomon his son, who was appointed to build it. The Lord had already supplied abundant facilities for the building through those great stores of gold, silver, brass, iron, timber and stone. With what God had thus supplied Solomon could have built the temple.

David's part, because of his large experience, was to advise and counsel and encourage Solomon, while Solomon himself was to carry out the work. The younger man must do the work, with the benefit of the older man's experience. So experienced older workers who have carried the work as far as they can are to make provision for it and to give counsel and encouragement from their experience. They are not to hinder or circumscribe the work, nor to dictate just how younger men whom God is qualifying to advance it shall do it in a different way, nor to stand blocking the wheels of its advancement.

Solomon's choice to go to other nations to secure facilities for building the temple, instead of using what God had supplied, was a departure from God. That departure brought sorrow.
